Environmental Restoration Services

For the restoration of disturbed sites, we offer the following services:

Monitoring

In order to maintain the health and vigor of your land and its natural community, we offer establishment and maintenance of long-term monitoring plots to track vegetation and erosion changes.

Such a program can be particularly helpful in identifying the establishment of any invasive species, allowing us to remove them while their populations are still small. This strategy is a more successful and less expensive approach to maintaining native populations than attempting to restore them once invasive species have become established.

Forestland Management

Ferrucci and Walicki, LLC specializes in the management and conservation of forests and related natural resources.
  • Forest Management Plans - Based on a thorough examination of land and timber, a course of action is developed to meet the client's objectives. The plan includes an inventory, forest mapping, and descriptions of forest types, soils, topography, and other significant features. The plan goes on to recommend specific management actions that should be taken to achieve the landowner's goals.
  • Marketing of Forest Products - Ferrucci and Walicki will serve and protect the client's interests while administering a timber sale, generally aimed at enhancing the value of the property. Services include marking of trees to be harvested, solicitation of offers through a sealed bid process, timber sale contract preparation, permit acquisition, and harvest supervision.
  • Timber Stand Improvement (TSI) - We offer pre-commercial thinning and pruning to increase timber growth and value. Investing in timber stand improvement today can pay big dividends down the road if you anticipate a timber harvest on your property in the future. TSI can also enhance the aesthetics or wildlife habitat on your land. As with a timber sale, TSI can be customized to meet the goals and preferences you have for your land.
  • Recreational Enhancements - Ferrucci and Walicki has a great deal of experience designing, constructing, and maintaining roads, trails, and scenic vistas in our clients' forests. Better access equals more enjoyment of the woods on your property. Some of our clients have requested bridges, benches, and even information kiosks in their scenic woodlands.

Property Tax Reduction Services

Forests are understood to be a public good. No matter who owns them, forests benefit society by providing clean air and water, wildlife habitat, and aesthetic values (among others). Unfortunately, it can be expensive to own forests due to pressure from development and rising property values.

Several states have recognized this problem and have taken steps to reduce the loss of precious forests by reducing the tax burden on landowners who choose not to develop their forests. F&W can help you enroll your property in Connecticut's PA-490 program, New York's Section 480-a program, or Massachusetts' Chapter 61 program. In each case a certified forester must be enlisted to confirm that a property meets the state-mandated requirements.

There may also be local open-space regulations that could help reduce your tax burden even if your property does not meet the specifications for forestland as defined in these state programs. Contact us for more information.

Appraisal and Investment Analysis

In addition to the many non-financial benefits of owning forestland, most forest owners view their holdings as an important diversification for their portfolio. Trees have the ability to increase in both size and quality over time when properly managed. There is also the potential of the underlying real estate to appreciate in value. Overall, the returns from forestland investments have been impressive and steady. A nice summary of timberland investment can be found here.

Ferrucci & Walicki's sustainable management program includes an inventory and appraisal of each forested property as well as a long-term projection of revenues generated from timber harvests. Contact us if you would like us to view your forest holdings and advise you on future forestland purchases.
